Biography

Hrant Dink was the fearless editor of Agos, an Istanbul-based newspaper that became the conscience of Turkish-Armenian dialogue during one of the region’s most fractious periods. Born in Malatya in 1954, Dink transformed journalism into an act of bridge-building, using his column to challenge nationalist narratives and advocate for minority rights with unflinching moral clarity. His willingness to speak uncomfortable truths made him simultaneously celebrated by progressives and reviled by hardliners who saw his work as a threat.

On January 19, 2007, Dink was assassinated by gunshot in broad daylight on an Istanbul street—a killing that shocked the nation and exposed the dangerous price of principled dissent. His murder became a watershed moment for Turkish civil society, sparking massive protests and forcing difficult conversations about tolerance and extremism that continue to resonate today.

Dink’s legacy transcends his 52 years. He remains an icon of courageous journalism and cross-cultural understanding, his words still quoted by activists and intellectuals fighting for pluralism in Turkey. He was buried at Balıklı Armenian Cemetery, a fitting resting place for a man who spent his life building bridges between communities.
