Athletes Athletes, Tennis Player
Ichiya Kumagae

Biography

Ichiya Kumagae was a trailblazer who brought tennis to Japan when the sport was still a curious Western import. Born in 1890 in the gritty coal-mining city of Ōmuta, Kumagae caught the tennis bug during an era when most Japanese athletes had never picked up a racket. He became one of the country’s earliest competitive players, helping transform tennis from an exotic novelty into a legitimate athletic discipline. His dedication during Japan’s early twentieth-century sports revolution made him a pivotal figure in the nation’s athletic coming-of-age.

Kumagae’s career spanned a transformative moment in Japanese history—when Western sports were gaining real traction and local athletes were beginning to hold their own on the international stage. He remained devoted to tennis throughout his life, not just as a player but as a contributor to the sport’s infrastructure and credibility in Japan. When Kumagae died in 1968 at age 77, he left behind a legacy as a genuine pioneer who helped establish the foundation for generations of Japanese tennis players to come.
