Ida Saxton McKinley 1847 – 1907
Biography
Born into Canton, Ohio’s prominent Saxton family, Ida embodied the grace and resilience expected of America’s most powerful woman. As First Lady from 1897 to 1901, she brought warmth and dedication to the White House during a pivotal era of American expansion and influence. Though her years in Washington were relatively brief, Ida earned deep respect from those around her, navigating her role with quiet strength and genuine devotion to supporting President William McKinley through both triumph and challenge.
After leaving the White House, Ida chose to return to Canton, the Ohio community that had always been her anchor. She spent her final years surrounded by family and the familiar rhythms of home, a deliberate rejection of the spotlight in favor of the life she’d built there. When she passed away on May 26, 1907, at fifty-nine, Canton mourned the loss of one of its most cherished daughters—a woman whose quiet influence had shaped a nation, even as her heart remained forever in Ohio.
