Biography

Infante Afonso, Duke of Oporto, was born on July 31, 1865, at the Palace of Ajuda in Lisbon, entering the world as a member of Portugal’s royal family during a pivotal era in European history. As a Portuguese Infante—a title reserved for members of the royal lineage—he occupied an important place within the kingdom’s noble hierarchy, holding the distinguished title of Duke of Oporto throughout his life.

Little is documented about the personal details of his life, yet his position within Portuguese society reflected the prominence of his birth and station. He lived through a period of significant change in Portugal, witnessing the nation’s transformation during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. His life spanned fifty-four years, concluding on February 21, 1920, in Naples, Italy, far from his birthplace.

Following his passing, Infante Afonso was laid to rest at the Monastery of São Vicente de Fora in Lisbon, one of Portugal’s most significant religious and burial sites. This final resting place honored his royal status and connected him eternally to the spiritual and historical heart of his homeland, where his memory remains preserved among Portugal’s distinguished nobility.
