Biography

Born into the gilded confines of Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1515, Injong of Joseon ascended to the throne as the twelfth king of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty—a position that demanded everything from a ruler still in his prime. His reign became a pivotal chapter in Korean dynastic history, one marked by his unwavering commitment to the sacred duties of kingship during a transformative era on the peninsula.

Injong’s life embodied the weight of royal responsibility. Raised entirely within palace walls, he devoted himself to steering his kingdom through a significant period of governance and cultural continuity. At just thirty years old, disease claimed the young monarch in 1545—the same palace where his life had begun. Though his reign was cut short, his legacy remained embedded in Joseon’s enduring narrative.

Today, Injong rests at Hyoreung in present-day Goyang, a tomb that stands as a dignified marker of his place in Korea’s royal lineage. His brief but consequential tenure continues to resonate through the long history of the Korean peninsula.
