Isaac Navon 1921 – 2015
Biography
Isaac Navon commanded Israeli politics and culture with the rare versatility of a true Renaissance statesman. Born in Jerusalem in 1921, he rose through the ranks of the Knesset to become the nation’s fifth president from 1978 to 1983—a role that crowned decades of ministerial service and reflected the broad respect he’d earned across Israeli society. But Navon refused to be confined by political titles; he was equally accomplished as a playwright and author whose creative works enriched Israeli intellectual life.
What set Navon apart was his refusal to choose between the life of the mind and the demands of governance. While steering the nation through critical years, he remained an educator at heart, shaping generations of Israeli thinkers and leaders. His legacy proved that the most enduring public figures are those who contribute across multiple domains—as policymakers, artists, and teachers all at once.
Navon spent his entire life in Jerusalem, the city of his birth, and was laid to rest there among Israel’s greatest leaders when he died in 2015 at 94. His multifaceted career stands as a model of intellectual and civic engagement.
