Biography

Born in the storied Silk Road city of Samarkand, Islam Karimov emerged as the defining political figure of modern Uzbekistan. When the Soviet Union crumbled in 1991, Karimov steered the newly independent nation through its most critical years, serving as its first president and architecting the country’s transition from communist rule to independent statehood. His decades-long tenure made him the central force in Uzbekistan’s nation-building era.

Karimov shaped the nation’s political and economic trajectory during a transformative period when Central Asia was redefining itself on the world stage. His leadership navigated the complex challenges of forging national identity and governance in a post-Soviet landscape. On September 2, 2016, at seventy-eight, Karimov died from a cerebral hemorrhage in Tashkent. He was laid to rest at Hazrat-Hyzr Mosque in his native Samarkand—a final return to the historic city where his remarkable political journey began.
