Biography

A nightclub operator who worked the Dallas entertainment circuit, Jack Ruby became an unlikely footnote in American history on November 24, 1963—the day he shot and killed Lee Harvey Oswald, the accused assassin of President John F. Kennedy. That single act of vigilante violence instantly transformed Ruby from a local businessman into a national figure, sparking decades of speculation about his motives and his connection to the events surrounding Kennedy’s death.

Ruby’s moment in the spotlight was brief but seismic. His shooting of Oswald, broadcast live on television, captivated and horrified the nation at its most vulnerable moment. The incident spawned countless theories and investigations, cementing Ruby’s place in one of history’s most scrutinized tragedies, though his true intentions remain debated to this day.

After his conviction, Ruby’s health deteriorated rapidly. He died of lung cancer on January 3, 1967, at just 55 years old, at Parkland Memorial Hospital in Dallas—the same facility where President Kennedy had died four years earlier. He was buried at Westlawn Cemetery in Illinois, leaving behind a legacy as enigmatic and contested as the historical moment that defined him.
