Biography

Jean-Baptiste Henri Lacordaire was born on May 12, 1802, in the small French village of Recey-sur-Ource. He would grow to become one of nineteenth-century France’s most influential voices, combining his gifts as both a preacher and journalist to engage the intellectual and spiritual life of his nation during a period of significant social change.

Throughout his career, Lacordaire distinguished himself through eloquent oratory and thoughtful written work. His dual calling allowed him to reach diverse audiences—from those who gathered to hear his sermons to readers who encountered his ideas through the printed word. He brought passion and clarity to his contributions, leaving an impression on French religious and public discourse that extended well beyond his lifetime.

Lacordaire spent his final years in Sorèze, where he died on November 21, 1861. His passing marked the end of a remarkable life devoted to preaching and journalism, two pursuits he wielded with equal conviction. Though nearly two centuries have passed since his death, his legacy endures as a testament to the power of eloquent faith and committed public witness.
