Biography

Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Gobel was born on September 1, 1727, in the small Alsatian town of Thann. His life would span one of the most transformative and turbulent periods in French history, during which religious, political, and social upheaval reshaped the nation he served.

Gobel rose to prominence as a Catholic clergyman, eventually becoming the Constitutional Archbishop of Paris. In this role, he navigated the profound challenges of the French Revolution, a period that tested the faith and resolve of religious leaders across the country. His position placed him at the intersection of Church and State during an era of extraordinary change and uncertainty.

On April 13, 1794, during the height of the Reign of Terror, Gobel’s life ended by decapitation in Paris. He was 66 years old. His death reflected the violent convulsions that gripped France during the Revolution, a time when many—clergy and laypeople alike—fell victim to the radical forces reshaping society. Though the location of his burial remains unrecorded, his memory endures as part of this pivotal chapter in history.
