Biography

Born into Paris aristocracy in 1847, Jean Casimir-Périer rose to the nation’s highest office as the sixth President of the French Republic. His ascent reflected the political currents of late-nineteenth-century France—a turbulent era when the young Third Republic was still finding its footing. Casimir-Périer navigated the presidency through mounting pressures and factional disputes, embodying the establishment’s attempt to stabilize a fractious nation caught between tradition and democratic transformation.

Though his presidential tenure proved brief against the backdrop of French political volatility, Casimir-Périer’s career represented the old guard’s grip on power during a watershed moment. His commitment to republican governance, however contested, left its mark on an institution still defining itself. When angina pectoris claimed him in March 1907 at fifty-nine, Paris lost a figure intrinsically linked to the Republic’s formative decades. He was entombed at the Chapelle Casimir-Périer in Pont-sur-Seine, a final resting place that honored both his lineage and his service to France.
