Biography

Jean-Claude Passeron was a French sociologist and thinker who helped shape how the social sciences understand education, culture, and knowledge itself. Born in Nice on November 26, 1930, he built an academic career that bridged sociology and epistemology, the study of how we know what we know, and spent years teaching at university level, shaping generations of students. His work probed the hidden mechanisms by which societies pass on learning and privilege, and he wrote with a rigor that made him a reference point far beyond France. Passeron died on October 30, 2026, at the age of 95, leaving a body of scholarship that continues to frame debates about education and social life.
