Biography

Born into Cognac’s merchant elite, Jean Monnet transformed from brandy-trade scion into Europe’s unlikely visionary. This French political economist became obsessed with a radical idea: that nations locked in centuries of bloody rivalry could choose cooperation instead. His conviction wasn’t naive idealism—it was hardheaded pragmatism born from watching two devastating world wars tear the continent apart.

Monnet engineered the intellectual and institutional blueprints for European unity, crafting frameworks that turned former enemies into economic partners. His belief that shared institutions and trade routes could replace tanks and treaties proved revolutionary. While diplomats drafted peace treaties, Monnet built the actual architecture of integration—the scaffolding upon which modern Europe would rise.

When Monnet died in 1979 at ninety, the Panthéon claimed him as one of France’s immortals. His vision outlasted him spectacularly: the continent he dreamed of remains his greatest monument, reshaping how nations think about cooperation and sovereignty across generations.
