Biography

Jean-Paul-Égide Martini was born on August 31, 1741, in Freystadt, a town in the German-speaking regions of Europe. From his early years in this modest setting, Martini would go on to develop a musical career that would eventually take him across Europe’s cultural landscape.

As a composer, Martini dedicated his life to creating musical works that reflected the artistic sensibilities of the late eighteenth century. His career spanned several decades during a time of significant evolution in European music, and he became known for his contributions to the classical period’s rich compositional traditions.

In his later years, Martini made his home in Paris, one of Europe’s most vibrant musical centers. He spent his final years in the French capital, where he continued his work until his death on February 14, 1816. His life’s journey—from his birthplace in Freystadt to his final residence in Paris—reflected the cosmopolitan nature of European musical culture during his era.

Following his passing, Martini was laid to rest at Père Lachaise Cemetery in Ménilmontant, France, one of Europe’s most distinguished burial grounds, where his memory remains among many other notable figures of his age.
