Biography

Jing Ke was born in the state of Zhao during China’s Warring States period, a time of political upheaval and shifting loyalties. Little is known of his early life, but he would become remembered as one of history’s most famous attempted assassins. His name endured through centuries because of a single, dramatic moment that challenged the rising power of the Qin state.

In 227 BCE, Jing Ke undertook a daring mission to assassinate Qin Shi Huang, the ambitious ruler consolidating power across China. He gained access to the Qin court by posing as an emissary, carrying what appeared to be valuable gifts. When presented to the ruler, Jing Ke attempted to strike, but his plan ultimately failed. The assassination attempt was thwarted, and he lost his life on January 1, 226 BCE, in Xi’an.

Though his mission ended in failure, Jing Ke’s attempt became a legendary moment in Chinese history—a story of courage and defiance against overwhelming odds. He represented the old order’s desperate resistance to Qin unification. His legacy lives on in historical records, literature, and cultural memory as a symbol of individual resolve against imperial might.
