Biography

A Scottish-born polymath who conquered Georgian London, John Arbuthnot proved that genius doesn’t stick to just one lane. Rising from the village of Inverbervie to become a trusted royal physician, Arbuthnot wielded his medical credentials like credentials of entry into the capital’s most brilliant circles. But his scalpel-sharp wit made him just as formidable with a pen—his satirical observations on human folly earned him a seat at the table with the era’s sharpest minds.

For nearly seven decades, Arbuthnot embodied the Renaissance ideal of the complete intellectual: equally at home diagnosing ailments and diagnosing society’s absurdities. He moved through London’s elite circles with the easy confidence of someone who understood both the body and the human condition. His work bridged medicine and literature, science and satire, making him an uncommon voice in an age of specialization.

When Arbuthnot died in 1735, London lost a singular talent. Buried at St James’s Church in Piccadilly, he left behind a legacy etched not just in his writings but in the minds of peers who recognized a rare intellect when they encountered one.
