John III 1300 – 1355
Biography
John III was born on January 1, 1300, in Brussels, during a formative period in the history of the Low Countries. He would go on to serve as Duke of Brabant, holding a position of significant responsibility in the region during the early-to-mid fourteenth century. His life spanned fifty-five years, a considerable lifespan for the medieval period, allowing him to witness and shape the political landscape of his homeland across several decades.
He spent his entire life in the Brussels area, both entering the world there at his birth and remaining connected to the region throughout his years. On December 13, 1355, John III passed away in the Brussels metropolitan area, concluding a life lived close to the heart of his duchy. His death marked the end of an era for Brabant’s leadership, though the specific circumstances surrounding his passing have not been preserved in historical records.
John III was laid to rest at Villers Abbey in Villers-la-Ville, Belgium, a final resting place befitting his ducal status. This Cistercian monastery served as the burial ground for nobility of his standing, reflecting the deep connections between the church and secular leadership in medieval Brabant. His legacy remained rooted in the region that defined his life.
