John IV 1403 – 1427
Biography
John IV was born on June 20, 1403, in Arras, inheriting titles that would define his place in medieval European nobility. As Duke of Brabant, Lothier, and Limburg, and Count of Hainaut, Holland, and Zeeland, he held significant territories across the Low Countries. These extensive lands reflected his family’s considerable power and influence during the early fifteenth century.
His life, however, was cut remarkably short. John IV died on April 26, 1427, in Brussels at only twenty-three years of age, before he could fully exercise the authority that his titles promised. The circumstances of his death were not recorded, leaving many details of his final days unknown to history.
Following his passing, John IV was laid to rest at Tervuren, in the Arrondissement of Leuven, Belgium, a location of significance to his house. Though his reign was brief and his legacy limited by his youth, he remains a figure of note in the genealogy of the Low Countries’ ruling families, representing a generation interrupted before its potential could fully unfold.
