John Julius Norwich 1929 – 2018
Biography
John Julius Norwich made history irresistible. The British historian transformed what could have been dusty academic texts into page-turning narratives that captivated millions, proving that rigorous scholarship and brilliant storytelling weren’t mutually exclusive. Born in industrial Lancashire in 1929, Norwich channeled his curiosity about the past into a career spanning nearly seven decades, establishing himself as the gold standard for making complex historical narratives accessible to everyday readers.
Norwich’s reputation rested on his mastery of European history, medieval Constantinople, and the papacy—subjects he tackled with both meticulous research and an elegant prose style that made him beloved by scholars and armchair historians alike. His prolific output and distinctive voice made him a cornerstone of British intellectual life, proving that history belonged in living rooms, not just lecture halls. Whether through his written works or cultural commentary, Norwich demonstrated an uncommon gift for illuminating the layers of civilization beneath our feet.
When Norwich passed away in June 2018 at an advanced age, London lost one of its most eloquent interpreters of the past. Laid to rest at St Mary on Paddington Green Church, he left behind a vast body of work that continues introducing readers to history’s most compelling stories.
