Biography

Jorge de Montemor was born on January 1, 1520, in Montemor-o-Velho, Portugal, during a period of flourishing Portuguese culture and literature. Little is widely documented about his early life, yet his work would come to influence the literary landscape of his era. He devoted himself to writing, contributing to the rich Portuguese literary tradition of the sixteenth century.

In his career, Montemor established himself as a writer of significance, working during the Portuguese Renaissance when humanist ideals were reshaping European thought and expression.
