José Antonio Primo de Rivera 1903 – 1936
Biography
Born into Madrid’s political elite in 1903, José Antonio Primo de Rivera became the defining ideological voice of a generation—founding Falange Española, a political movement that would reshape twentieth-century Spain. Charismatic and uncompromising, he crystallized a vision that captivated thousands during the nation’s most volatile decade, positioning himself as a central figure in Spain’s bitter struggle over its future.
His trajectory was cut brutally short. On November 20, 1936, during the Spanish Civil War’s opening chaos, Primo de Rivera was executed by gunshot in Alicante at just thirty-three years old. His death transformed him into a martyr for his followers, cementing his legacy as a polarizing force whose influence would echo through Spanish politics and culture for generations. He was buried at San Isidro Cemetery in Madrid, where his memory remains intensely contested.
