Biography

José Rebolledo de Palafox was born on October 28, 1775, in Zaragoza, Spain, into a time of significant change for the nation. His life would be defined by service to his country as both a military leader and nobleman. Throughout his lifetime, he rose to prominence, eventually earning the distinguished title of 1st Duke of Saragossa, a reflection of his importance to the Spanish state and his deep connection to his native Zaragoza.

As a general and duke, Palafox dedicated himself to the service of Spain during a critical period in European history. His career embodied the responsibilities and challenges faced by Spanish leadership during the early nineteenth century. Though the details of his military campaigns and administrative accomplishments remain part of Spanish historical records, his legacy endured through his noble title and the respect accorded to his position.

Palafox spent his final years in Madrid before succumbing to tuberculosis on February 15, 1847. In recognition of his distinguished service and noble standing, he was laid to rest in the Crypt of the Cathedral-Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza—a final resting place befitting a man of his stature and a fitting return to the city of his birth. His memory remains preserved in both history and the sacred ground where he was interred.
