Joseph of Anchieta 1534 – 1597
Biography
Born in the sun-soaked Canary Islands in 1534, Joseph of Anchieta answered a higher calling that would take him across continents. This Jesuit missionary became a spiritual force in Colonial Brazil, dedicating his life to spreading faith and devotion in the Portuguese territories of the New World. Anchieta embodied the missionary zeal of his era, channeling the Church’s expansionist energy into direct service—teaching, preaching, and connecting with the communities he encountered.
For decades, Anchieta poured his energy into Brazil’s spiritual landscape, becoming woven into the fabric of colonial religious life. His work represented the intersection of faith and exploration that defined the age of discovery. When he died in 1597, after a lifetime of tireless ministry, his legacy remained rooted in the very land he’d labored to evangelize. Buried in Anchieta, Brazil, his final resting place stands as a monument to a man who made the New World his spiritual home.
