Biography

Józef Kałuża was born on February 11, 1896, in Przemyśl, a city in southeastern Poland with a rich sporting tradition. He grew up during a transformative period in Polish history, as his nation worked to establish its independence and identity following decades of partition. From an early age, Kałuża developed a passion for football, a sport that was gaining tremendous popularity across Poland during the early twentieth century.

Kałuża dedicated much of his life to football, becoming part of Poland’s emerging athletic community during the interwar years. His involvement in the sport reflected the broader Polish enthusiasm for building national institutions and cultural pride through athletics. Though his playing career unfolded during a time of significant social change, he remained committed to the game he loved.

Józef Kałuża’s life was cut short when he died on October 11, 1944, in Kraków, at the age of 48, from meningitis. His death came during one of Poland’s most difficult periods, as the nation endured the devastation of World War II. He was laid to rest at Podgórze New Cemetery in Kraków, where he is remembered as part of Poland’s sporting heritage.
