Biography

Júlia Sigmond devoted her ninety years to a singular, idealistic mission: building bridges between people through language. Born in 1929 in Turda, Romania, she became a passionate champion of Esperanto, the constructed language created to dissolve barriers and foster global peace. While others pursued conventional paths, Sigmond embraced this linguistic movement with missionary zeal, dedicating herself to its growth and ideals of universal brotherhood during decades when such internationalism seemed radical.

Her commitment took her across Europe, ultimately settling in Piacenza, Italy, where she remained active in the Esperanto community well into her ninth decade. Sigmond’s life embodied an unwavering belief that shared language could transcend nationalism and unite humanity. When she died from COVID-19 on March 23, 2020, at ninety, the movement lost a stalwart advocate—someone who had spent a lifetime proving that connection, however unconventional the medium, remains humanity’s greatest tool.
