Biography

Karl Gützlaff was a German missionary whose life was devoted to religious work in China during the nineteenth century. Born on July 8, 1803, in Pyrzyce, he would go on to dedicate much of his adult life to missionary service in one of the world’s most challenging fields. His commitment to his faith and his chosen calling shaped the course of his entire life.

Gützlaff’s years in China represented a significant chapter in the history of Christian missionary work in Asia. Working as a missionary during a complex period of cultural and political change, he engaged in the difficult work of spreading his faith across a vast land with deeply rooted traditions. His efforts reflected the spiritual dedication that characterized many missionaries of his era.

On August 9, 1851, Gützlaff’s earthly journey came to an end in Hong Kong. His contributions to missionary work were recognized through his burial at Hong Kong Cemetery in the Wan Chai District, a final resting place that reflected the significant time he had invested in Asia. Though details of his later years remain sparse, his legacy endures as part of the broader history of nineteenth-century Christian missions in China.
