Károly Beregfy 1888 – 1946
Biography
Károly Beregfy was born on February 12, 1888, in Crvenka, a town in the Austro-Hungarian Empire. He lived through a transformative period in Central European history, witnessing the collapse of the empire and the emergence of modern Hungary in the twentieth century.
During the final years of World War II, Beregfy served as Defence Minister under Ferenc Szálasi’s government. His role placed him among Hungary’s political and military leadership during one of the nation’s most turbulent chapters. The Arrow Cross party, which governed Hungary during this period, collaborated with Nazi Germany in the war effort.
Beregfy’s life ended on March 12, 1946, in Budapest. He was executed by hanging, a consequence of his position within the wartime fascist regime. His death came as part of the postwar trials and accountability measures that Hungary undertook following the end of World War II and the Soviet liberation of the country. The location of his burial has not been recorded in historical documentation.
