Larry Fine 1902 – 1975
Biography
That wild shock of reddish hair and manic energy made Larry Fine impossible to miss—and audiences couldn’t get enough. Born in Philadelphia in 1902, Fine carved out one of comedy’s most durable careers as a member of the Three Stooges, the slapstick trio that became synonymous with physical humor and anarchic mayhem. His expressive face and perfect timing made him the ideal foil in the ensemble’s controlled chaos, helping define an entire generation’s understanding of what made people laugh.
Fine’s decades-long tenure with the Stooges proved he was far more than a one-trick performer. Whether getting poked in the eyes, yanked by his trademark hair, or launching into rapid-fire verbal bits, he committed fully to comedy’s most unglamorous demands. That willingness to absorb punishment with precision timing and infectious enthusiasm made him legendary among comedy devotees.
When Fine died of a stroke in January 1975, he left behind an unmistakable legacy. His work had transcended vaudeville roots to define an entire comedic language—one that still makes audiences cringe and laugh in equal measure.
