Biography

Layne Staley’s haunting, soulful wail became the sound of grunge’s darkest hour. As the lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, the Bellevue, Washington native helped define the Seattle sound that exploded across the globe in the early ’90s, delivering gut-wrenching vocals layered with the band’s crushing guitar riffs. His ability to convey raw emotion—anguish, rage, vulnerability—made Alice in Chains unmissable, turning them into one of the decade’s most influential rock acts.

Behind the microphone was an artist wrestling with demons. Staley’s towering vocal presence masked a lifelong battle with addiction that would ultimately consume him. Even as Alice in Chains dominated MTV and sold millions of albums, his personal struggle intensified, leading to the band’s retreat from the spotlight by the late ’90s.

On April 5, 2002, Staley died of a drug overdose in Seattle, just shy of his 35th birthday. His loss robbed rock music of one of its most distinctive voices—a frontman whose piercing emotional honesty defined an era, and whose tragic end remains an indelible part of grunge’s dark legacy.
