Biography

The architect of Taiwan’s democratic transformation, Lee Teng-hui steered the island through its most turbulent political decades as President of the Republic of China from the late 1980s into the early 2000s. Born in 1923, Lee became the commanding figure who shepherded Taiwan from authoritarian rule toward democratic reform—a seismic shift that redefined the nation’s identity and global standing during the Cold War’s twilight years.

His three presidential terms encompassed sweeping constitutional changes, the first direct presidential elections, and bold diplomatic maneuvers that reshaped cross-strait relations. Lee’s pragmatic yet visionary leadership left an indelible mark on Taiwan’s political culture, earning him reverence among democracy advocates and fierce criticism from Beijing. He remained a towering presence in public discourse well into his nineties.

Lee died on July 30, 2020, from septic shock at age 97, closing the chapter on one of Asia’s most consequential political careers. His legacy—a democratic Taiwan that defied expectations—continues to reverberate through modern geopolitics.
