Biography

A restless Renaissance man before the term existed, Lew Wallace conquered four careers with the same fierce determination that made him a Union general during America’s Civil War. Born in Indiana in 1827, Wallace traded battlefields for courtrooms, governor’s mansions, and ultimately, the writer’s desk—each reinvention more audacious than the last.

But it’s *Ben-Hur* that cemented Wallace’s immortality. His sweeping 1880 novel became a cultural juggernaut, captivating millions with its tale of a Jewish prince and the chariot race that would echo through generations. The book’s success proved that a warrior-statesman could also be a literary visionary, a notion few contemporaries expected from a former general.

Wallace died in Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1905, claiming stomach cancer at seventy-seven. He left behind not just a bestselling novel but proof that ambition needn’t be confined to a single arena. *Ben-Hur* outlasted empires—outlasting him by more than a century and counting.
