Li Lianying 1848 – 1911
Biography
Li Lianying wielded extraordinary influence in China’s imperial palace as the devoted eunuch servant of Empress Dowager Cixi, one of history’s most powerful women. Born in 1848, Li rose from humble beginnings to become Cixi’s most trusted aide, commanding respect and fear throughout the Forbidden City’s labyrinthine corridors. His proximity to power—and to the woman who controlled China’s destiny during its most turbulent decades—made him one of the era’s most consequential behind-the-scenes figures.
For decades, Li Lianying stood at the epicenter of imperial life, navigating the treacherous politics of late Qing Dynasty rule alongside his mistress. He witnessed and influenced some of modern China’s most critical moments, from palace intrigue to the empire’s gradual collapse. When Cixi died in 1908, Li’s influence began to fade. He passed away just three years later in 1911, as the dynasty itself crumbled into history.
