Licio Gelli 1919 – 2015
Biography
Licio Gelli’s name became synonymous with Italian intrigue and Cold War shadow politics. The Pistoia-born financier rose to prominence as the mastermind behind P2, the clandestine Masonic lodge that operated as a hidden power structure within Italy during the 1970s and ’80s. With tentacles reaching into government, military, intelligence, and banking, P2 represented everything mysterious about postwar Italian politics—a secretive network where real decisions allegedly happened behind closed doors, far from public scrutiny.
Gelli’s influence extended across decades and continents, from wartime activities to post-war financial manipulation, making him one of Europe’s most enigmatic and controversial figures. The P2 scandal, when finally exposed, shocked Italy and exposed how thoroughly unelected elites had infiltrated the nation’s institutions. His involvement in scandals and covert operations generated decades of historical investigation and debate, cementing his place in the darker chapters of modern Italian history.
The mysterious power broker died on December 15, 2015, at 96, succumbing to respiratory failure in Arezzo. Gelli’s long life spanned nearly the entire twentieth century, leaving behind a legacy shrouded in intrigue—a man whose true motivations and all his activities may never be fully understood.
