Liu Penzi 11 – 100
Biography
Liu Penzi lived during one of ancient China’s most turbulent periods, a time when powerful rebel movements challenged imperial authority. Born on January 1, 11 AD, he would experience firsthand the dramatic upheavals that characterized the later Han dynasty era. His life spanned nearly a century, witnessing the rise and fall of emperors and the shifting fortunes of those who sought power during China’s internal conflicts.
In 25 AD, Liu Penzi was placed upon the Han throne by the Red Eyebrows, a formidable rebel faction known as the Chimei. This appointment, however, was far from a position of genuine authority. As a puppet emperor, Liu Penzi served at the pleasure of his rebel benefactors, his reign lasting only until 27 AD before the Red Eyebrows’ power waned and his rule came to an end. His brief tenure symbolized the chaos of the era, when military strength and factional loyalty determined who held the imperial seal.
Liu Penzi passed away on January 1, 100 AD, having lived through nine decades of Chinese history. Though the circumstances of his death remain unrecorded, his life serves as a remarkable window into a pivotal period when traditional authority was challenged and extraordinary individuals found themselves caught between competing forces seeking to reshape the empire.
