Biography

Lucius Aurelius Cotta was a distinguished figure of the Roman Republic, born on January 1, 186 BCE in Ancient Rome during a formative period of the empire’s expansion and development. He came of age during a time when Rome’s influence was growing throughout the Mediterranean world, and his path would lead him to serve his nation in one of its highest offices.

In 144 BCE, Cotta achieved the pinnacle of a Roman statesman’s career when he was elected consul, one of the two chief executives of the Republic. This honor reflected the esteem in which he was held by his peers and the confidence they placed in his leadership abilities. As consul, he would have been responsible for overseeing military campaigns, judicial matters, and the administration of Rome’s far-reaching territories.

Cotta’s life concluded on January 1, 200 BCE, the same date that marked his birth fourteen years earlier. While the exact circumstances of his death and the location where he was laid to rest remain unknown to history, his service to Rome endured as part of the Republic’s enduring legacy. He represents one of many capable leaders whose dedication to public service helped shape the ancient world.
