Biography

Lynne Overman was the sharp-tongued character actor who became Hollywood’s go-to guy for wisecracking sidekicks and morally ambiguous types. With a career spanning the silent era through the early 1940s, Overman carved out a niche as the actor you’d cast when you needed somebody world-weary, clever, and utterly unforgettable in a supporting role. His drawling delivery and weathered charm made him a fixture in studios across the Golden Age.

Born in Maryville in 1887, Overman brought theatrical seasoning to every film he touched, refusing to fade into the background despite playing second fiddle. He worked steadily through the ’30s and into the ’40s, becoming that rare character actor audiences remembered by name. His death in Santa Monica on February 19, 1943—just shy of his 56th birthday—cut short a career still firing on all cylinders, leaving behind a legacy as one of Hollywood’s most reliable and entertaining supporting players.
