Maciej Rataj 1884 – 1940
Biography
A towering figure in interwar Polish politics, Maciej Rataj rose to become Marshal of the Sejm—the powerful presiding officer of Poland’s parliament—a position that cemented his status as one of the nation’s most influential statesmen. Born in 1884, Rataj commanded respect across the political landscape for his leadership during Poland’s formative years as an independent nation, steering parliamentary debates and shaping governance during a critical era.
His life ended in tragedy on June 21, 1940, when he was executed by firing squad in Palmiry during the Nazi occupation of Poland. Rataj fell victim to one of history’s darkest periods, when Poland’s intellectual and political elite faced systematic destruction. Buried at Palmiry Cemetery among others who perished during the occupation, Rataj’s memory endures as a testament to Poland’s resistance and the cost of standing for democratic principle during fascism’s reign.
