Margaret of Anjou

Biography

Born into French nobility in 1430, Margaret of Anjou became one of medieval Europe’s most powerful consorts when she married King Henry VI of England. Her strategic royal union shaped the geopolitical landscape of 15th-century Britain during a period of unprecedented instability. Margaret wielded considerable political influence at the English court, navigating the treacherous waters of royal succession and factional warfare with fierce intelligence—her choices and alliances reverberated across kingdoms locked in struggle.

Margaret’s life spanned the Wars of the Roses, that blood-soaked civil conflict that would define an era. Though she operated within the constraints imposed on royal women, her fingerprints marked major political events of her time. She bore witness to—and participated in—the transformation of European power structures, where marriages meant armies and alliances determined dynasties.

When Margaret died in 1482 at fifty-two, she left behind a legacy as a woman who refused invisibility despite her era’s rigid expectations. Her final resting place in Angers Cathedral honored a life lived at history’s pivot point, where medieval pageantry collided with ruthless political ambition.
