Biography

Martín Codax stands as one of medieval Galicia’s most celebrated literary figures, remembered for his contributions to the rich troubadour tradition of the Iberian Peninsula. Born on January 1, 1300, in Vigo, he emerged during a vibrant period of Galician-Portuguese cultural flourishing. As a joglar—a professional musician and poet of his era—Codax created works that captured the emotions and experiences of his time with remarkable artistry and grace.

Among his enduring legacy are seven cantigas d’amigo, lyrical poems that explore themes of love, longing, and feminine perspective with delicate beauty. These compositions represent some of the finest examples of medieval Galician verse and continue to resonate across centuries. His works demonstrate the sophisticated musical and poetic traditions that characterized the joglar class during the High Middle Ages, when such artists played vital roles in courtly life and cultural transmission.

Codax lived an exceptionally long life, reaching the age of one hundred before his death on January 1, 1400. Though the precise location of his final years and burial site remain unknown to history, his artistic contributions have ensured his name endures. Through his cantigas d’amigo, Martín Codax left an indelible mark on medieval literature, preserving voices and sentiments that continue to inspire and move readers today.
