Mateo Flecha 1481 – 1553
Biography
Mateo Flecha was born on January 1, 1481, in Prades, Spain, during a remarkable period of musical development in the Iberian Peninsula. Little is documented about his early years, yet his life would span seven decades of significant musical activity and influence. He came of age during the Renaissance, a time when Spanish musical traditions were flourishing and evolving under various cultural influences.
Throughout his lifetime, Flecha established himself as a respected musician, contributing to the rich musical heritage of Spain during the late medieval and early Renaissance periods. His work reflected the distinctive character of Spanish musical composition and performance of his era. Though specific details of his career remain sparse in historical records, his recognition as a musician of note suggests he held considerable standing within his musical community.
Flecha spent his final years at Poblet Monastery, one of Spain’s most significant monastic institutions. He died there on January 1, 1553—precisely seventy-two years after his birth—and was laid to rest within the monastery grounds. His burial at Poblet Monastery underscores his deep connection to religious and musical life, as such monasteries were centers of artistic and spiritual achievement. Flecha’s legacy remains part of Spain’s important musical tradition.
