Maurice Chevalier 1888 – 1972
Biography
Maurice Chevalier was the Parisian charmer who conquered the world with his straw hat, infectious grin, and silky voice. Born in 1888 in Paris’s working-class 20th arrondissement, this singer-actor-entertainer became the definitive French export—a bridge between Belle Époque cabaret and Hollywood glamour. With a career spanning decades, Chevalier mastered both stage and screen, becoming synonymous with Continental sophistication and old-world elegance.
What set Chevalier apart wasn’t just his talent—it was his magnetic presence. Audiences fell under his spell through his ability to deliver a song with playful warmth or command a scene with understated charisma. He became a global icon, representing French joie de vivre at a time when the world couldn’t get enough of Parisian allure.
On January 1, 1972, Chevalier died of cardiac arrest at 83, closing the curtain on one of entertainment’s most enduring careers. He’s buried in Marnes-la-Coquette, but his legacy remains vivid—a testament to the power of charm, craft, and an unmistakable French accent.
