Melvin Laird 1922 – 2016
Biography
A Wisconsin congressman who became one of America’s most influential defense strategists, Melvin Laird shaped Cold War policy and military reform across four decades of public service. Rising through the political ranks during the turbulent sixties and seventies, he wielded enormous influence over the nation’s defense apparatus during some of history’s most consequential moments.
Born in Omaha in 1922, Laird built a reputation as a sharp political operative and defense intellectual whose fingerprints were all over pivotal decisions that defined an era. His work in Congress and beyond left an indelible mark on how America approached national security and military modernization during the nuclear age.
When Laird passed away in November 2016 at ninety-four, the nation honored his decades of service with burial at Arlington National Cemetery—a fitting tribute to a man whose career embodied the gravity and complexity of twentieth-century American statecraft.
