Biography

A firebrand who transformed from underground militant to statesman, Menachem Begin rose from the Jewish quarters of Brest to become one of Israel’s most consequential prime ministers. Begin’s ascent to power marked a seismic shift in Israeli politics—he commanded the Irgun before independence, then later led the nation through some of its most defining moments, making bold diplomatic and military decisions that reshaped the Middle East’s political terrain.

As Prime Minister, Begin proved he was willing to break with conventional wisdom, most dramatically in pursuing peace with Egypt—a move that stunned rivals and allies alike. His tenure was defined by unwavering conviction and strategic boldness, decisions that sparked fierce debate even as they cemented his influence on Israeli policy for generations to come.

Begin’s life ended March 9, 1992, following a heart attack in Tel Aviv. He was buried at the Mount of Olives Jewish Cemetery, his legacy embedded in the nation he helped build. Today, he remains a towering, controversial figure whose imprint on modern Israel remains unmistakable.
