Moe Berg

Biography

Moe Berg lived a life of remarkable contrasts, pursuing two distinctive callings across the twentieth century. Born on March 2, 1902, he developed talents that would eventually lead him down two very different paths—one in professional baseball and another in service to his country during a time of great global conflict. His diverse interests and keen intellect set him apart from his contemporaries, enabling him to move between these worlds with uncommon facility.

Beyond the baseball diamond, Berg answered a call to serve his nation in an intelligence capacity during World War II. His work as a spy demonstrated the same strategic thinking and analytical abilities that had made him competitive in athletics. This dual legacy—athlete and intelligence operative—represents the complexity of a man who refused to be defined by a single profession or identity.

Berg’s life came to an unexpected end on May 30, 1972, when he died in Belleville from a fall. He was laid to rest at Mount Scopus in East Jerusalem, Palestine, a final resting place that reflected the depth of his personal commitments and beliefs. Though his years numbered seventy, Berg’s influence extended far beyond the statistics of his athletic career, remembered as a man of principle who contributed to his country in ways both public and clandestine.
