Biography

Born into Fez’s storied medinas, Mohammed ben Abdallah rose to become Sultan of Morocco during one of the most turbulent centuries in North African history. His eighty-year reign stretched across the eighteenth century—a period when European powers circled the Mediterranean like sharks. He commanded respect across Morocco’s fractious regions at a time when holding the kingdom together was an act of political defiance itself.

His decades in power showcased relentless determination to preserve Moroccan independence as colonial ambitions threatened the region. From Fez to the coastal power centers, Mohammed ben Abdallah navigated impossible terrain: balancing regional authority, resisting foreign encroachment, and keeping a sprawling sultanate unified. He remained engaged with his kingdom’s governance well into his final years, never truly stepping back from duty.

When he died in 1790, Morocco mourned a leader who’d kept the nation sovereign through sheer political will. His final resting place at Dar al-Makhzen—Rabat’s royal seat itself—cemented his place in the dynasty’s sacred history. Mohammed ben Abdallah embodied an era when a sultan’s survival meant his nation’s survival.
