Biography

Born in czarist Russia and shaped by the turbulent twentieth century, Moshe Sharett emerged as one of Israel’s most consequential architects during the nation’s earliest, most vulnerable years. Rising through the ranks of the Jewish leadership in Palestine, he became the country’s second Prime Minister, steering the fledgling state from 1954 to 1955 during a period when every institutional decision rippled across a fragile new democracy fighting for survival.

Sharett’s life itself was a chronicle of transformation—from Jewish boy in the Russian Empire to statesman navigating the geopolitical minefields of the Middle East. His tenure as Prime Minister placed him at the helm during pivotal moments that would define Israel’s trajectory. Though his time in the top office was brief, his imprint on the nation’s foundational years proved indelible.

When Sharett died in Jerusalem on July 7, 1965, Israel lost a towering figure whose entire existence had been devoted to the Jewish state’s establishment and survival. He was buried at Trumpeldor Cemetery in Tel Aviv, joining other luminary figures of Israeli history in a place of enduring honor.
