Muhammad II of Granada 1236 – 1302
Biography
Muhammad II of Granada was born on October 15, 1236, in Arjona during a pivotal era in medieval Iberian history. He would come to serve as Emir of Granada, holding a position of significant authority and responsibility during the thirteenth century. His life spanned a period of considerable change and challenge in Al-Andalus, the Islamic territories of the Iberian Peninsula.
Throughout his tenure as Emir, Muhammad II navigated the complex political landscape of medieval Granada, a region that remained a center of Islamic culture and governance even as Christian kingdoms expanded their influence across Spain. His leadership during these turbulent times reflected the resilience of the Granada emirate during the waning centuries of Islamic rule in the peninsula.
Muhammad II spent his final years in Granada, where he remained until his death on April 16, 1302, at an advanced age. His remarkably long life—spanning more than six and a half decades—allowed him to witness and influence significant developments in the history of Granada. He left behind a legacy as a ruler of one of medieval Spain’s most enduring Islamic states.
