Biography

Nam June Paik didn’t just make art—he hijacked television itself. Born in Seoul in 1932, this Korean-American visionary became the godfather of video art, transforming a medium designed for passive consumption into a canvas for radical experimentation. While the world watched commercials, Paik was deconstructing the medium, bending cathode rays and manipulating broadcasts into hypnotic installations that challenged everything viewers thought they knew about technology and creativity.

His genius lay in seeing possibility where others saw only gadgets. Paik fused Eastern philosophy with Western avant-garde techniques, creating sprawling video walls, performance pieces, and interactive sculptures that felt like transmissions from the future. His willingness to smash the boundary between high art and popular culture—to make technology intimate, playful, and profound—inspired generations of artists to think radically about what art could be.

Paik died in Miami on January 29, 2006, but his legacy proved unmortable. He’d already won: today’s digital artists, installations, and immersive experiences owe everything to his fearless vision of art colliding with technology.
