Biography

Born into early twentieth-century Baghdad, Naziha al-Dulaimi became a fearless architect of women’s rights in Iraq when advocacy meant genuine personal risk. As cofounder and president of the Iraqi Women League, she mobilized women across the nation, giving voice to the voiceless and carving space for female participation in civic life during an era when such activism demanded extraordinary courage.

Al-Dulaimi’s work with the League proved transformative for Iraqi society, establishing a powerful platform that elevated women’s interests and reshaped conversations about their roles in public life. She didn’t simply talk about change—she organized it, bringing women together across communities to demand recognition and reform.

Her pioneering legacy transcended borders. Though al-Dulaimi spent her final years in Herdecke, Germany, her influence remained rooted in Iraq’s social fabric. When she passed away in October 2007 at eighty-four, she left behind a blueprint for women’s empowerment that continues resonating throughout the Middle East. She proved that one woman’s determination could redefine an entire nation’s conversation about gender and power.
