Born into colonial Burma in 1911, Ne Win rose to become Southeast Asia’s most commanding military figure—a man who would steer an entire nation through nearly three decades of radical transformation. From 1962 until 1988, he wielded extraordinary power as head of state, orchestrating Burma’s evolution through an era of sweeping political upheaval and modernization. His influence extended far beyond military matters, reshaping the country’s institutional foundations and charting its independent course during one of Asia’s most turbulent periods.
